Symbols can support expressive communication using augmentative communication systems. Symbols are available to represent the vocabulary that is typical of very young children through that of teenagers into adulthood.
Augmentative communication refers to any tool, device, picture, word, or symbol that compensates for expressive or receptive communication difficulties. Symbol-based augmentative communication systems can be in a variety of forms, such as paper-based communication boards and books, low tech voice output systems, and high-tech speech generating devices.
